We’ve had bad luck with children; they’ve all grown up.

One great thing about community is sharing over time – sharing meals together, sharing news on the street, sharing advice, sharing as you and your family grow. My daughter, an only child has benefited from a friend and neighbor sharing her clothes as she has grown over the past five years. This handing down has been great because my daughter gets barely worn stuff, that she likes, and I get to save some money and time by not having to shop for lots of clothes. This sharing thing was going great until this summer. My daughter has grown almost 6″ in the last year. It feels like it all happened this summer. Don’t get me started on her feet.

She is now “the tall one” at school. She is now as tall as our neighbor-friend who is two years older. I look her every day and wonder where did my little girl go. The neighbor-friend’s mom and I now wonder if the clothes-sharing has to go the other direction.
Because of all her growing, this past month we kept up the sharing and gave my daughter’s stuff to another little girl. Plus, I now have to carve out some time this weekend to go buy longer pants.

I have an eleven year old cousin who can hand shoes down to me, and she can hardly wear them, her feet grow so fast. My mom has fourth grade students bigger than me. And even looking at my kid, where did the baby go? She seems to be racing toward toddler-hood, wanting to get there as fast as she can….

yes Abby, I look at pictures of her and it seems like another person is here today. Thanks for your thoughts.

As you know, I too am a single Mom. My youngest wore her sister’s clothes for many, many years. I loved being able to unpack the garments I had carefully packed away two or three years before. The process brought back many memories – much like looking at a photo album.
I never used the term “hand-me-down” and I never unpacked when they were around. My youngest didn’t realize until she was a pre-teen that many of the clothes she wore had been her sister’s. Each item held two sets of memories for me which made the whole process more endearing.
After my youngest used them, the nicer items were repacked and donated so that another little girl and her family would be able to use the clothes and develop memories around them.
